Sequential Factory Diagnostic Tree

Perform each diagnostic step in order. Disconnect electrical power and turn off utility shutoffs before inspecting wiring or internal mechanical assemblies.

Step 1: Physical & Electrical InspectionMultimeter & Visual
Action: Disconnect electrical power, remove freezer interior back panel, and inspect evaporator coil.
Bench Test: Check if evaporator coil is completely encased in a solid block of white frost or ice.
Expected Standard: Light dusting of frost only; solid ice block confirms active defrost failure.
If Failed / Out of Spec:

Manually melt frost using commercial heat gun and proceed to Step 2.

If Passed:

Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Physical & Electrical InspectionMultimeter & Visual
Action: Disconnect the aluminum defrost heating element wires at bottom of evaporator coil.
Bench Test: Measure resistance across heater element terminals using digital multimeter.
Expected Standard: Normal resistance is between 25 and 35 ohms at room temperature.
If Failed / Out of Spec:

Resistance reads open circuit (0L). Replace tubular defrost heater (242044020).

If Passed:

Proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Physical & Electrical InspectionMultimeter & Visual
Action: Test continuity across defrost bimetal thermostat clipped to top of evaporator coil.
Bench Test: Measure resistance across bimetal leads while thermostat is chilled below 20°F (or submerged in ice/freeze spray).
Expected Standard: 0 ohms (closed circuit) when cold; opens at 45°F–50°F.
If Failed / Out of Spec:

Bimetal thermostat contacts open when frozen. Replace defrost thermostat (242046001).

If Passed:

Proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: Physical & Electrical InspectionMultimeter & Visual
Action: Inspect main electronic control board defrost relay.
Bench Test: Initiate forced defrost test mode and measure line voltage output on defrost heater pin.
Expected Standard: 120V AC delivered to defrost circuit.
If Failed / Out of Spec:

Replace main electronic control board (242115279).

If Passed:

Clear fault code and verify normal automatic defrost cycling.
